Sustainability

In William McDonough's sermon, "Design, Ecology, Ethics and the Making of Things," a thought of his got me thinking. He said that when he came from the far East, he thought that America was made of people with lives, be instead he discovered that America was filled with "consumers with lifestyles (5)." How does this view of America effect sustainability and its practice?

  1. I think that America is full with consumers. We depend on consuming in order to survial. A lot of things that we do is meant for profit. I think sustainable architecture will not be very successful because being a consumer is our lifestyle and its how we determine if we have a wealthy life or not, because lets face it, no one wants to live poor.

  2. I do agree that sustainable design is expensive at the moment, but if you think about it, isn't anything that first comes out expensive? Look at the I-phone. I think that the retail price when it first came out was close to $400. Now it's half that price. I'm sure supply and demand and the saturation of an object in the market have alot to do with it's price, but I think that sustainable design will eventually saturate the market. This will cause the prices of sustainable design to reduce. This won't happen for a while, but I think that it is possible for sustainable design to trickle down to the "middle class" market. By then, something new will be out.
